What Do You Need to Start a Blog?

The first step to starting a blog is deciding what topic you plan to blog about. It helps to have a defined niche topic rather than having multiple topics. For example, this blog is all about how to begin the blogging journey. It is actually my second blog.

I had such great success with my first blog, deemiddleton.com, that I was often getting asked how to do what I do. I decided to explain the step by step process for “What Do You Need to Start a Blog?” by writing blog posts to answer this topic. Rather than selling this info in a course, as many do, I chose to create a blog.

So, first we have addressed the topic of defining your niche. Now let’s go a step further. Primarily, you will want to choose a niche that you know lots about and will not run out of content ideas quickly. You do not need to be an expert in your niche or have any specific qualifications, but I would not recommend ever choosing a niche for which you are not qualified.

For example, if you are not a parent, do not choose to write about parenting. That may sound funny to you, but that exact question has been asked in a blogging forum I’m involved with.

The second important step to narrowing down your niche topic is to make sure you can write “evergreen” content…and lots of it. You do not want to choose a niche that gets outdated very quickly.

For example, if you choose to write about the latest iphone, you will find your content is no longer relevant when another newer model iphone is released. I want you to focus on content that is going to continue to be useful to your readers for years and years to come.

Once you have defined a niche that is evergreen and you can produce lots of content for, we are going to begin to select a domain name. What will you call your blog? You can find available domain names at bigscoots.com. You will just type in some ideas and they will tell you if that domain name is available.

A few pointers when selecting a domain name: You do not want to use words that are hard to spell or hard to remember. You want repeat traffic from your readers. You want them to remember the name of your site and be able to easily find you.

Once you have selected your domain name, go ahead and purchase it. Typically, the cost is around $10-$15 and is good for one whole year. If you use Bigscoots to do so, tell them you want to go ahead and buy their “managed wordpress hosting plan”. They will then set you up with your new wordpress site. If you have no content written, you will want to have Bigscoots keep your new blog in the “staging environment.” Once you have a few blog posts published, you can tell them you are ready to go “live”. You do not have to have lots of content written before going live, but it helps to have about 10 or so blog posts written.

What Do You Need to Start a Blog? Key Points to Remember:

  1. Choose your niche
  2. Research domain names
  3. Buy your domain
  4. Set up a staging managed wordpress site with your hosting company
  5. Start building your new blog
